The nose ornaments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are caJled mukhuttis and the ones worn by brides during a vivaah have ornate, traditional designs imitating the lotus flower and the graceful swan. Though a lotus is the most favoured flower, due to its association with Goddess Lakshmi and prosperity. other floral motifs are popular too. Pullakku is a type of nose ring seen mostty in Malayali brides. This is basically the pendant suspended from the partition of the nostrils - the portion extending from the septum. The pul/aku is similar to the n%k of Bengal in that it is meant to be worn on the septum.
The Punjabi bride wears the shikarpuri nath - a gold ring strung with as many as 20 to 25 motifs or charms - including tiny birds, mangoes, leaves, florets. pearls and so on.
Women in Rajasthan wear the nemun, which is a small gold or silver ring with precious stones and the bneuny� has a slightly different floral design. The laung is a traditionaJ and common nose stud that is shaped like a clove, while a latkan is a small pendant suspended between the nostrils, because of its pendulous character. This may also take the form of a small-semi-circular ring with delicate tassels hanging from the base. "The circular design of a Rajasthani nose ring signifies the sun and the hemispherical design is representative of the moon tit says the diva of designer jewellery, Asha KamaJ Modi.
In Uttar Pradesh the nath is adorned with two pearls and a dangling bead to signify multitude and prosperity. As in most parts of India, the nath is a gift from the maternal uncle of the bride.
"The most majestic of all is of course the Chamba nathlJ, says Modi. Traditionally, the hill folk of Himachal use a plethora of pearls and other coloured beads in the designs. Some are also strung with paisley or leaf motifs. The average diameter of each of these huge nose rings is about 10 centimeters. "The minimum weight of each of these enormous nose rings is about 10-15 grams, though it goes up according to the socia-economic status of the brides," adds Modi.
Whether the design is traditional or contemporary, it is a definite truth that a nose ring adds that regal aura to any bride's visage.
