Description :
This textbook describes the physics of semiconductor nanostructures with emphasis on their electronic transport properties. At its heart are five fundamental transport phenomena: quantized conductance, tunnelling transport, the Aharonov-Bohm effect, the quantum Hall effect, and the Coulomb blockade effect.

The book starts out with the basics of solid state and semiconductor physics, such as crystal structure, band structure, and effective mass approximation, including spin-orbit interaction effects important for research in semiconductor spintronics. It contains material aspects such as band engineering, doping, gating, and a selection of nanostructure fabrication techniques. The book discusses the Drude-Boltzmann-Sommerfeld transport theory as well as conductance quantization and the Landauer-Bttiker theory. These concepts are extended to mesoscopic interference phenomena and decoherence, magnetotransport, and interaction effects in quantum-confined systems, guiding the reader from fundamental effects to specialized state-of-the-art experiments.

The book will provide a thorough introduction into the topic for graduate and PhD students, and will be a useful reference for lecturers and researchers working in the field.

About the Author :
Professor Thomas Ihn took his PhD in Physics in 1994 at TU Munich, Germany, then did post-doctoral work at the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham. He began work as a Research Assistant at the Solid State Physics Laboratory, ETH Zurich, in 1998, and is now Professor of Physics there.

Description :
I 1st heard of kp in a course on semiconductor physics taught by my thesis adviser William Paul at Harvard in the fall of 1956. He presented the kp Hamiltonian as a semiempirical theoretical tool which had become rather useful for the interpre- tion of the cyclotron resonance experiments, as reported by Dresselhaus, Kip and Kittel. This perturbation technique had already been succinctly discussed by Sho- ley in a now almost forgotten 1950 Physical Review publication. In 1958 Harvey Brooks, who had returned to Harvard as Dean of the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics in which I was enrolled, gave a lecture on the capabilities of the kp technique to predict and ?t non-parabolicities of band extrema in semiconductors. He had just visited the General Electric Labs in Schenectady and had discussed with Evan Kane the latters recent work on the non-parabolicity of band extrema in semiconductors, in particular InSb. I was very impressed by Dean Brookss talk as an application of quantum mechanics to current real world problems. During my thesis work I had performed a number of optical measurements which were asking for theoretical interpretation, among them the dependence of effective masses of semiconductors on temperature and carrier concentration. Although my theoretical ability was rather limited, with the help of Paul and Brooks I was able to realize the capabilities of the kp method for interpreting my data in a simple way.

About this book :
This book presents a detailed exposition of the formalism and application of k.p theory for both bulk and nanostructured semiconductors. For bulk crystals, this is the first time all the major techniques for deriving the most popular Hamiltonians have been provided in one place. For nanostructures, this is the first time the Burt-Foreman theory has been made accessible. Thus, the reader will gain a clear understanding of the k.p method, will have an explicit listing of the various Hamiltonians in a consistent notation for their use, and a set of representative results. In addition, the reader can derive an excellent understanding of the electronic structure of semiconductors.

About the author :
Dr. Lew Yan Voon has received recognitions for this teaching (e.g., advising awards, NSF CAREER award) and has taught the k.p method to MS students, PhD students and postdocs; this pedagogical experience has been invaluable for testing the manuscript as a textbook.

Since its origin in 1966, the arrangement of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has separated itself through the cautious determination of surely understood creators, editors, and patrons. The Willardson and Lager arrangement, as it is broadly known, has prevailing with regards to delivering various point of interest volumes and parts. Not just did a hefty portion of these volumes have an effect at the season of their production, however they keep on being very much refered to years after their unique discharge. As of late, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the College of California at Berkeley joined as a co-manager of the arrangement. Professor Weber, a notable master in the field of semiconductor materials, will encourage add to proceeding with the arrangement's convention of distributed opportune, exceptionally applicable, and long-affecting volumes. A portion of the late volumes, for example, Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Flaws in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, Rapid Heterostructure Gadgets, Oxygen in Silicon, and others guarantee that this custom will be kept up and even extended.

Mirroring the really interdisciplinary nature of the field that the arrangement covers, the volumes in Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will keep on being of incredible enthusiasm to physicists, scientific experts, materials researchers, and gadget builds in present day industry.

Description :
By the year 2020, the basic memory components of a computer will be the size of individual atoms. At such scales, the current theory of computation will become invalid. A new field called "quantum computing" is emerging that is reinventing the foundations of computer science and information theory in a way that is consistent with quantum physics - the most accurate model of reality that is currently known. Remarkably, this new theory predicts that quantum computers can perform certain tasks breathtakingly faster than classical computers, and, better yet, can accomplish mind-boggling feats such as teleporting information, breaking supposedly "unbreakable" codes, generating true random numbers, and communicating with messages that betray the presence of eavesdropping. "Explorations in Quantum Computing" explains these burgeoning developments in simple terms, and describes the key technological hurdles that must be overcome in order to make quantum computers a reality. This book draws upon the very latest research and uses executable software simulations to help explain the material and allow the reader to experiment with the ideas behind quantum computers. This is the ideal text for anyone wishing to learn more about the next, perhaps "ultimate," computer revolution.

From the Back Cover :
This comprehensive exploration of signals and systems develops continuous- time and discrete-time concepts/methods in parallel ? highlighting the similarities and differences ? and features introductory treatments of the applications of these basic methods in such areas as filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback. Relatively self-contained, the book assumes no prior experience with system analysis, convolution, Fourier analysis, or Laplace and z-transforms.

FEATURES :
Develops continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel ? highlighting the similarities and differences. E.g.:
Ch. 1 on basic signals and system properties, Ch. 2 on linear time-invariant systems, and Ch. 3 on Fourier series representation each develop the continuous-time and discrete-time concepts in parallel.
Ch. 9 on the Laplace Transform and Ch. 10 on the Z-transform deal with the two domains separately, but often draw parallels between results in the two domains.
Introduces some of the important uses of the basic methods that are developed ? e.g., filtering, communication, sampling, discrete-time processing of continuous-time signals, and feedback.
NEW?A companion book contains MATLAB-based computer exercises for each topic.
NEW?Material on Fourier analysis has been reorganized significantly to provide an easier path for the reader to master and appreciate the importance of this topic. Now represented in four chapters, each of which is far more streamlined and focused, introducing a smaller and more cohesive set of topics.
NEW?Frequency-domain filtering is introduced very early in the development to provide a central and concrete illustration of why this topic is important and to provide some intuition with a minimal amount of mathematical preliminaries.
NEW?Relocates coverage of Sampling before Communication. * Allows for discussion of important forms of communication, namely those involving discrete or digital signals, in which sampling concepts are intimately involved.
 NEW?Chapter-end Problems

Description :
This text is an introductory compilation of basic concepts, methods and applications in the field of spectroscopy. It discusses new radiation sources such as lasers and synchrotrons and describes the linear response together with the basic principles and the technical background for various scattering experiments.

Review :
From the reviews :
PHYSICALIA "The fundamental idea of introducing students to a variety of different spectroscopic techniques is excellent and the book is a potential text for a course taught at the senior level or graduate level in a physics, chemistry, or materials science program. Each chapter is followed by several problems which should prove useful for teaching purposes...The reader will find extensive and up-to-date bibliography and references, as well as several appendices."

CELLULAR & MOLECULAR BIOLOGY "This book gives an excellent overview on the most common techniques in use as well as in biophysics, in biochemistry and in cellular and molecular biology"

From the reviews of the second edition :
This substantial book covers all the major spectroscopy techniques that are applied to materials characterisation in their solid-state. this is a textbook probably aimed more at senior or graduate level classes . Each chapter is also accompanied by an appendix, which provides supplemental information including derivatives of equations and extended tables of data. for anyone wanting a comprehensive text on spectroscopy this is certainly a good book to have on your bookshelf and a worthy second edition. (David Bucknall, Contemporary Physics, July, 2012)

From the Back Cover :
Spectroscopic methods have opened up a new horizon in our knowledge of solid-state materials. Numerous techniques using electromagnetic radiation or charged and neutral particles have been invented and worked out to a high level in order to provide more detailed information on the solids. The text presented here is an updated description of such methods as they were originally presented in the first edition. It covers linear response of solids to electromagnetic radiation in a frequency range extending from megahertz or gigahertz as used in spin resonance spectroscopy, to infrared spectroscopy and various forms of spectroscopy in the visible and near visible spectral range. It extends to spectroscopy in the UV and x-ray spectral range and eventually several spectroscopic methods are addressed in the frequency range of g radiation. Likewise linear response to irradiation with particles such as electrons, positrons, muons, neutrons, and atoms is discussed. Instrumental and technical background is provided as well as application to the analysis of the solid state.

New developments especially addressed in this second edition cover the exciting new field of mesoscopic and nanoscopic solids using light scattering from small particles, single electron (addition) spectroscopy, and quantization in magnetic fields. Likewise, the development and application of synchrotron radiation has encountered a dramatic progress particularly in the field of high resolution and angular resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. Free electron lasers from undulators in linear accelerators are becoming available with dramatic enhancement in brightness and provide a fourth generation of synchrotron light sources. The better understanding and the possibilities to manipulate spin states as it happens in spintronic research stimulated sophisticated technologies in electron and nuclear spin resonance which are also covered in the new edition. Breakthrough developments were obtained in the field of light emission from semiconductor devices and for femtosecond spectroscopy. In addition in almost all other spectroscopic techniques progress was obtained in the last years and is reviewed in the text. Thus the book may be considered as a state-of-the-art introductory text in solid-state spectroscopy.

Each chapter includes problems. The concept of this textbook is designed for graduate students and young professors who want to set up lectures or courses in solid-state spectroscopy.

Description :
Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The "Willardson and Beer" Series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in publishing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise indeed that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded.
Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.
